The Nba Free Agency frenzy is about to start.
In just a few hours hordes of Nba executives will be on the hunt to win the signatures of the most coveted Nba free agents. The ones that will turn their franchises around. The ones who will bring the team to the promise land… You will see hordes of execs knocking at players’ doors, picking up their office phones and make them burn in calling players, flying to players’ houses, condos, cribs (whatever) hoping to find them at home (not sure about this…) and lure them with the most engaging, compelling and astonishing power point presentation. Everyone will be up and running.
- The Man (yes with capitol M) above. In the picture. The man who can showcase 5 rings that, last time I checked, are the equivalent of Scudettos in Italian football (or soccer, for you, my beloved Americans). A man who has a wine cellar made of such fine wines to make the best restaurant in your city one look like an average cellar. A man who loves to travel. A man, who, among all of this, happens to be the best basketball coach in the world nowadays. What will Gregg Popovich do at midnight? He will sleep!
I’m not calling anyone at midnight. I’ll be in bed. And if that’s the difference in someone coming or not coming, then I don’t want them
I love Pop! I’m sorry, but I have a basketball crush for him!
- Where will Marc Gasol be playing next season? According to Marc Stein of Espn in the exact same place he’s been playing in last years: Memphis. Gasol doesn’t want to go anywhere. He wants to play for Memphis and he’s willing to listen to no one besides Memphis. That is why Grizzlies’ executives are in Spain, where Marc is spending his holidays (before starting the training camp with the National Team in preparation for the European Championship in September), to knock at his door right after midnight and presenting him the franchise proposal including a maximum salary for a multiple years offer. The hope for Memphis’ executives is to come away with a verbal agreement with Gasol’s camp at least. Should the contract talks break down – an unforeseeable thing, given Gasol will to stay put – every possible scenario will be open for Gasol.
- Where will LaMarcus Aldridge end up? There’s a bunch of NBA teams that are looking to try to sign him. According to Ramona Shelbourne of Espn Aldridge is scheduled to visit at least 7 franchises, starting with Lakers and Rockets, followed by Spurs and Mavericks and ending with Toronto, Phoenix and New York.
The Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets will get the first opportunities to meet with LaMarcus Aldridge shortly after the free-agency period officially begins at 9:01 p.m. PT Tuesday in Los Angeles.
Aldridge also will meet with the San Antonio Spurs, Dallas Mavericks, Phoenix Suns and Toronto Raptors on Wednesday and with the New York Knicks on Thursday, league sources told ESPN.com.
According to one source, the chance of Aldridge staying with the Portland Trail Blazers is “very unlikely”
My educated guess is: Spurs (RC Buford will be alive and kicking when the Free Agency will begin), Lakers (seem interested in Iman Shumpert too) and Mavericks (Tyson Chandler may be directed to Milwaukee)
- The Sacramento Kings are a mess. What you don’t do to keep your franchise player and star of the team happy. A strange cat , always on the edge of a nerve crisis, but gifted with mad skills. A guy who’s constantly abiding his defensive duties but who is a huge, huge rebounder and a spectacular offensive weapon. Demarcus Cousins, ladies and gentlemen. Now, Vivek Ranadie, the dynamic (maybe too much…. dynamic) Sacramento Kings owner, after having invested Vlade Divac of all the managerial power of the franchise, is trying to find a way to fire coach George Karl without loosing too much money with this operation. Why? Because, it seems that Cousins and Karl haven’t been on the same page (They weren’t at all) in the short stint that Karl has been on Kings bench last season and, in addition, the Lakers are strongly seeking a trade to bring Cousins to the Staples Center next year (Lakers, rumors say, seem to be ready to put their first draft pick D’Angelo Russell into the package to send to the Kings for Cousins). Thus Ranadie’s thought to go talking to the most coveted NCAA coach by the NBA: John Calipari. Ranadie is just the last of other NBA owners who tried to convince Calipari to leave UK and embrace the task to right the ship of an NBA franchise in despair. To do so, Ranadie seem to have offered 10 millions of dollars a year to Calipari covering the role of basketball executive and coach at the same time. Small detail: coach Cal has just tweeted that he is staying at University of Kentucky and he and Ranadie had just a talk about Cousins himself given that Calipari was Cousins’ coach during his only year at UK, but no job offer was made at any point during that phone call. As I said, in the end, this is a huge mess.
